VANCOUVER, Wash. (Nov. 1, 2005) New Edge Networks is expanding its successful initiative for building direct connections to bankcard payment processors to also include other retail business suppliers and clearinghouses. Direct connections make it quick and easy for businesses to switch to new broadband networks.
New Edge Networks is now building direct connections to various back-office online solutions providers, payroll services, health benefits management companies, IT helpdesks, digital video display or monitoring services, ATM network providers, kiosks, among others. Previously, New Edge Networks built and maintained secure connections only to bankcard payment processors.
Direct connections are all about providing choices for increasing revenue, cutting expenses, and improving efficiency, said Dan Moffat, president and CEO of New Edge Networks. Every business needs a network to remain competitive in todays business environment.
The direct connections are part of a company initiative called ARNie, short for Americas Retail Network information exchange.
By using ARNie connections to pre-determined suppliers, retailers avoid installing and paying for separate dedicated connections to the same firms, or through their headquarters where most companies aggregate and send traffic to their suppliers. The cost savings to businesses for these connections range from about $250 and up per month, depending on circuit speed and location.
Once businesses get on our nationwide network, direct connections allow New Edge Networks to easily cross-connect them to key suppliers and clearinghouses over a secure, private network; data communications traffic does not go over the Internet, Moffat said.
Use of the direct connections is included in the price of broadband networks from New Edge Networks.
Through ARNie, New Edge Networks is building an interconnected network of companies that can use broadband to help retailers solve business problems, Moffat said.
First we built BigFoot, the nations largest broadband network for building multi-site wide area networks and IP-based VPNs. Now we are building ARNie for connecting retail business locations to key suppliers, Moffat said. We are unaware of any other communications carrier that offers direct connections to various suppliers as a value-added feature.
We are positioning New Edge Networks as being vendor-ready for connecting businesses to their key business partners, Moffat said. We are taking wide area networking to a whole new level.
New Edge Networks is targeting suppliers and clearinghouses that serve businesses with multiple locations that are migrating to new IP-based VPNs, short for Internet Protocol-based virtual private networks. New IP-based VPNs enable businesses to converge all their data, voice, and video applications over one network.
Suppliers with always-on direct connections to New Edge Networks avoid the cost and complexity of managing multiple customer connections because all their customers data communications traffic reaches them through high-speed, redundant connections from New Edge Networks.
Also, suppliers do not need to maintain large modem pools for processing data transmissions from clients that have not made the switch to broadband from dial-up telephone connections. For most suppliers, processing broadband transactions is less expensive and faster than dial-up.

New Edge Networks began establishing direct connections to bankcard payment processors early this year as an outgrowth of its Retail Broadband Alliance. To date, the company has working or pending connections with payment processors that currently handle more than 50 percent of U.S. credit card transactions.
