Approaching 26 States Where High-speed Internet Access is Available in Smaller Cities
VANCOUVER, Wash. - (Aug. 29, 2000) - New Edge Networks today announced it is offering high-speed wholesale broadband access service using DSL technology in more than 300 market locations, and is closing in on 26 states where the service will be available through Internet service providers.
The leading national wholesale broadband services provider in small, midsize and semirural communities, New Edge Networks has installed DSL network equipment in nearly 200 other locations bringing to nearly 500 the total number of installed or operational sites representing a presence in half the country. The current 302 central office locations represent 18 states from Washington, the company's home base, to Florida. In addition, work is progressing at more than 600 other sites in all 50 states. New Edge Networks plans to provide service nationwide in 2001.
"By any standard our speed to coverage is a remarkable feat," said Dan Moffat, president, CEO and co-founder of New Edge Networks. "We're walking the talk and continuing to fulfill our mission of nationwide coverage for smaller, underserved communities where a huge appetite exists for broadband and always-on high speed Internet connections."
Through its more than 300 existing operational locations, New Edge Networks is closing the digital divide in more than 160 cities and towns in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The company focuses on communities generally with 250,000 population and below.
In addition to its aggressive DSL network deployment, New Edge Networks last June completed a national data communications network that allows its customers to bypass major portions of the public Internet and avoid growing traffic congestion. The national backbone network is based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode, or ATM technology capable of handling data, voice, video and other value-added services.
"Our long string of achievements is testimony to the talent and dedication of more than 400 New Edge Networks employees who have met the challenge in barely one year of operation," Moffat said. The company first introduced service last December in its headquarters city of Vancouver, Wash.
DSL technology uses ordinary copper phone lines in homes and businesses to enable access to the Internet and corporate data networks at guaranteed speeds of 1,500 kilobits per second, and faster, compared to the typical 28.8 and 56 kilobits per second through dial-up modems. Other key benefits are "always on" connections eliminating dialing up, waiting and sudden disconnects during downloads; secure access using dedicated facilities, and reliability because the network is monitored around the clock.
