VANCOUVER, Wash. - (Feb. 22, 2000) - New Edge Networks, the leading national wholesale DSL provider in small, midsize and semirural markets, has received certification as a competitive local exchange carrier in four additional states.
The new state additions include Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi and New Hampshire. They bring to 35 the total number of states where New Edge Networks is authorized to provide high speed Internet access using digital subscriber line, or DSL, technology. The company expects to receive authorization in all 50 states by mid year.
While pursuing state authorizations, New Edge Networks negotiated interconnection agreements with all the major incumbent local telephone companies and filed for space in almost 1,000 telephone company central office locations. The upstart company is installing an average of 100 DSL systems a month and expects to be operating in small, midsize and semirural areas in all 50 states by early next year.
DSL technology uses existing copper phone wires in homes and businesses to enable access to the Internet and corporate LANs at speeds up to 100 times faster than through analog modems. For business users DSL generally means twice the speed for about half the cost. In addition to speed, other key benefits of DSL technology include continuous "on demand" connectivity eliminating dial up or waiting; secure access using dedicated facilities; and, reliability because the network is monitored around the clock.
A wholesale DSL service provider, New Edge Networks plans to offer its DSL service through local, regional and national Internet service providers. Through strategic reseller agreements with ISP's and other communications service providers, New Edge Networks can quickly reach business user that currently do not have broadband access capabilities and drive users to its network.
