New Edge Networks Hits Gran/D-SLAM in Network Build Out

VANCOUVER, Wash. - (Jan. 11, 2000) - New Edge Networks may have established a new time-to-market benchmark for deploying high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) service, positioning itself as one of the country's top names in broadband and Internet data services in underserved small, medium and rural markets.

Upstart New Edge Networks took just 120 days to initiate service after receiving its first round of equity funding from three top-tier venture capital firms. Today, the data competitive local exchange carrier is clipping along, installing an average of one DSL switch a day on its march for establishing a national footprint.

"From day one we've stayed focused on becoming a national wholesale DSL provider, moving quickly to build our network, driving users to our network and building a work environment with spirited, caring achievers," said Dan Moffat, president, CEO and co-founder of Vancouver, Wash.-based New Edge Networks. "Our results speak for themselves and we'll stack them up against the best out there."

Here is a summary of performance highlights for the first six months of operation:

- Filed petitions for Competitive Local Exchange Carrier
certification with utility commissions in all 50 states and
already received approvals from about half.

- Installed Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs)
switching systems in more than 50 central office locations.

- Submitted filings for co-locating DSLAMs in more than 650
telephone company central offices nationwide. Several hundred
others are pending.

- Built a state-of-the-art centralized network operations center
for monitoring network performance round-the-clock.

- Designed and built a custom operating support system (OSS) that
pushes out functionality to customers, enabling "customer self
service," flow through provisioning and faster delivery of
broadband to customers.

- Negotiated reciprocal service agreement with other national DSL
carriers.

- Scaled the organization from five co-founders to more than 150
employees in its headquarters operations and seven operating
regions.

"Arguably, our time to market is the fastest and most aggressive among the new wave of data competitive local exchange carriers spawned following the landmark Telecommunications Act of 1996," Moffat said. "We were able to do this by leveraging the strength and extensive CLEC, ILEC and ISP experience of our team.

"We're scaling to install more than 100 DSLAMS a month to capture a huge market potential of business users that currently do not have broadband data capabilities in under served smaller cities and rural areas.

"We believe demand for broadband access in these markets is as strong as it is in the major areas," Moffat said. "In addition, we're doing something good in our communities. We are helping bridge the digital divide that separates those who have access to broadband technology from those who do not."

A wholesale provider, New Edge Networks offers service through strategic partners including Internet service providers and other local communications service providers. This helps drive users more quickly onto the network.

According to an industry report published Dec. 7, 1999 by J. P. Morgan Securities Inc., broadband and Internet data services are the primary movers of a technology-driven economy. In a chart, the Wall Street research firm depicted New Edge Networks as one of four leading national wholesale players in the DSL provider market.

Using existing telephone wires in homes and business, breakthrough DSL technology provides access to the Internet and corporate LANs at speeds up to 100 times faster than traditional analog (dial-up) modems and at affordable costs. The principal customer benefits of DSL technology are speed, continuous "on demand" connectivity eliminating dial up or waiting, secure access using existing dedicated facilities, and reliability because the network is monitored around the clock.
