New Edge Networks Sees Broadband DSL Orders Surge

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Jan. 10, 2001 – New Edge Networks today announced that orders for its broadband service surged more than 60 percent between November and December driven by former competitors’ customers scurrying to prevent their working high-speed DSL lines from being disconnected because their service providers are scaling back or going out of business.

New Edge Networks, the leading national broadband service provider in small, midsize and semi-rural areas, scrambled to work with customers’ Internet service providers and the incumbent local exchange carriers (ILEC) on transferring existing DSL lines, or loops, to New Edge Networks before they are permanently disconnected. The orders are mostly for business class broadband DSL service but also include residential customers and telecommuters.

“Without transferring the existing loops customers risk losing their working DSL connections, are forced to reinitiate a completely new order and incur new costs or installation delays,” says Dan Moffat, president CEO and co-founder of New Edge Networks.

“It would be unfortunate if these customers, through no fault of their own, have to go through this process again,” Moffat says. “It is imperative for the broadband access industry as a whole to keep customers happy. Once customers experience broadband, it is very tough to do without it.”

New Edge Networks took in more than a record 1,700 orders during the last week of December alone. Most of these orders are from existing broadband DSL customers whose service providers announced plans to cease operations. They also include first time orders from customers who wanted to take advantage of year-end promotions before New Year price hikes.

Unlike first time orders that require line pre-qualifications, testing and inside wiring work, the wave of existing customer orders are more easily activated. This saves customers and New Edge Networks time and money.

“Clearly, despite the current industry shakeout, demand for high-speed broadband DSL remains unabated,” Moffat says. “As an industry, it is our collective obligation and responsibility to make it fast and easy to provision service. We’re getting better everyday.”

New Edge Networks currently provides broadband DSL service in more than 450 locations, representing almost 300 cities and towns in 23 states. Installation work is progressing at another 150 locations and six new states. The company also provides frame relay and WAN services to more than 600 companies nationwide. New Edge Networks derives more than half of its revenue from non-DSL services.

“We have executed our business plan well and we are among a fortunate few broadband access companies to get funding this fall from stellar investors,” Moffat says. “We have a unique coverage footprint in second, third and fourth-tier cities at a time when major city carriers are scaling back their expansion plans.”
