New Edge Networks Expands Broadband Services to Indiana & Ohio

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Jan. 23, 2001 – New Edge Networks, the leading national broadband service provider in small, midsize and semi-rural markets, today announced it is expanding its high-speed DSL and other business-class broadband services in Indiana and Ohio, bringing to 26 the total number of states where the company now offers service.

New Edge Networks has launched broadband DSL service in Michigan City, Indiana, and Findlay, Ohio. The DSL service reaches approximately 75 percent of homes and businesses within these communities. New Edge Networks offers a full range of consumer and business class broadband DSL service through local, regional or national Internet service providers.

Work is progressing in a number of other Indiana and Ohio cities where New Edge Networks plans to introduce service within the next few weeks as part of the company phase one network build-out. Other Indiana cities targeted for broadband DSL service include: Anderson, Bedford, Bloomington, Columbus, Evansville, Kokomo, Lafayette, Mishawaka, Muncie, New Castle, Newburgh, Peru and South Bend. Other Ohio cities include: Canton, Holland, Maumee, Medina, Middletown, Perrysburg, Springfield, Toledo and Zanesville.

“The economic viability of these communities hinges on their ability to get competitive broadband access sooner not later,” said Dave Spitznagel, general manager of the East Region for New Edge Networks. “Folks who chose to live and do business in small and medium size cities want and need broadband access as much – if not more so – as those in nearby major cities.”

“Broadband access allows businesses to slash their communications expenses and expand their ability to compete in a net-centric environment,” Spitznagel says. “Everyone wants more speed and for less cost. The Internet is fundamentally changing how we work, live, learn and play.”

In addition to broadband DSL service for business and residential customers, New Edge Networks provides wide area networks, frame relay and virtual private lines to business customers nationally. These business-class network services are available direct through New Edge Networks and authorized distributors.

Analysts project that up to 50 percent of businesses with fewer than 20 employees will have broadband access within five years. For businesses with fewer than 100 employees, the projection jumps to three out of four having broadband access.

New Edge Networks currently provides high speed Internet access in about 500 locations, representing more than 300 cities and towns in 26 states, including Indiana and Ohio. Installation work is progressing at another almost 100 locations and three new states to round out New Edge Networks’ phase one build-out plan. New Edge Networks also provides frame relay and WAN services to more than 600 companies nationwide.

DSL service provides access to the Internet and corporate data networks over standard telephone lines at guaranteed speeds of 1.5 million bits per second or faster compared to 28,800 or 56,000 bits per second through dial-up modems. Business-class DSL transmits and receives at the same speed and is ideal for large graphic, text, audio and video file exchanges, company networking and collaborative functions.

Other benefits include continuous “always on” connections that eliminate dialing up, busy signals, waiting and disconnects during downloads; secure access using dedicated facilities; and reliability because the network is monitored around the clock.

For business customers with dedicated leased lines from the local telephone company, business-class DSL technology generally provides the same speed at half the monthly cost. Monthly DSL rate offerings range among Internet service providers and generally include the monthly ISP access charge, local telephone charges, plus unlimited usage.
