VANCOUVER, Wash. – (June 17, 2003) – New Edge Networks and Covad Communications Group Inc. (OTCBB:COVD.OB) extended an existing agreement enabling New Edge to sell frame relay services over DSL technology throughout their combined national footprint that reaches more than 5 million potential businesses.
Business customers with dispersed office and remote locations such as restaurant chains and retail stores within the combined coverage area can now have broadband access at savings up to 50 percent from traditional frame relay services. Frame Relay over DSL offers a high quality of service, secure connections and bandwidth guarantees.
"New Edge Networks’ frame over DSL offering over the combined footprint with Covad represents a compelling choice for traditional frame relay customers under pressure to reduce their network costs," said Rod Woodward, telecom services industry analyst with Frost & Sullivan. "It also opens up a large, previously untapped market among small and midsize businesses that need the reliability of Frame Relay but cannot afford the higher monthly costs that are associated with it."
The combined New Edge Networks and Covad DSL network spans over 2,300 central office locations, representing the largest national DSL carrier footprint in the country.
“There are two ways to reduce multi-site network costs,” said Dan Moffat, president and CEO of New Edge Networks. “Network managers can go to an IP-based VPN (virtual private network) solution or they can retain Frame Relay reliability and reduce the cost of Frame Relay access. All major carriers now have endorsed Frame Relay over DSL in their offerings.”
The Frame Relay over DSL being offered is an end-to-end protocol enabling customers to use DSL connections in the combined footprint to access New Edge Networks’ national Frame Relay network.
“We believe that businesses with multi-locations, within that footprint, have been waiting for a cost-effective, secure networking solution,” said Andrew Lockwood, executive vice president and general manager of Covad Strategic Partnerships. “The expansion of our agreement with New Edge strategically strengthens our wholesale distribution channel and offers businesses better broadband options through New Edge.”
Moffat added, “With our combined Frame Relay and DSL capabilities, New Edge Networks offers customers choices in access method and price points. Through our agreement with Covad, we effectively triple the symmetrical digital subscriber line (SDSL) central office footprint we use to lower customers’ Frame Relay costs with Frame Relay over DSL and give customers the ability to lower Frame Relay access costs.”
New Edge Networks agents and selling partners could sell Frame Relay over DSL throughout the combined footprint with Covad. Customers that have locations outside of the combined national footprint have the ability to subscribe to New Edge Networks’ standard Frame Relay services, enabling substantial savings through a blended Frame Relay as well as Frame Relay over DSL network.
