VANCOUVER, Wash., – (Feb. 10, 2004) – New Edge Networks Tuesday announced it can provide multi-site managed network services using frame relay and DSL technologies throughout BellSouth’s (NYSE: BLS) telephone operations in nine southern states.
New Edge Networks has broadened the depth and breadth of its national reach for offering integrated managed services to businesses and carrier customers by adding BellSouth-provided DSL to the New Edge Networks solution set. This enables New Edge Networks and its selling partners to offer customers managed services using a full suite of cost effective access methods including frame relay and DSL.
New Edge Networks gains access to about 1,325 BellSouth central office locations, including more than 1,065 sites where New Edge Networks or affiliate carriers had no prior presence. The expansion is part of a New Edge Networks initiative called ‘BigFoot’ to provide national broadband connectivity enabling virtual private networks (VPN) and other IP-based services.
“Business and carrier customers want ubiquitous reach to all their remote sites; they don’t want the hassle and cost of managing separate agreements with different carriers, in different regions or integrating technologies themselves to maximize network savings,” said Dan Moffat, president and CEO of New Edge Networks. “With a single point of contact with New Edge Networks, customers can get a choice of carriers, technologies, and products at virtually any business address in the U.S.
“We have been working hard to implement interconnection arrangements with most carriers, establishing network and electronic interfaces, and positioning New Edge Networks as the carrier of choice for integrated managed services for enterprise and carrier customers,” Moffat said. “New Edge Networks is the underlying off-net broadband carrier for most major U. S. carriers.”
Interconnection with BellSouth brings to more than 5,680 central offices where New Edge Networks can offer business broadband access using cost effective DSL technology. Where DSL is not suitable, New Edge Networks will use other access methods including ATM and frame relay.
According to a new study by Vertical Systems Group, DSL is the most widely installed Internet access technology for business use. The study shows that an estimated 42 percent of all U. S. businesses are now using broadband technologies to access the public Internet.
New Edge Networks already has completed installation of network interfaces into most of BellSouth’s 38 telephone calling areas known as LATAs. This has fully enabled frame relay and DSL connectivity between New Edge Networks and BellSouth. Regionwide access should be completed before the end of this month.
“With its national ATM backbone and agreements with other selling partners and carriers, New Edge Networks is an important addition to our wholesale distribution channel,” said Marc Cathey, BellSouth sales assistant vice president. “This network implementation with New Edge Networks makes it easier for customers to have reach throughout our coverage area.”
