New Edge Networks’ BigFoot Claims Biggest Private VPN, WAN Reach

SAN FRANCISCO – (May 3, 2004) – The chief executive of New Edge Networks, a national provider of secure multi-site managed networks and dedicated Internet access Monday asserted that the upstart company has successfully positioned itself as a single source for cost-effective WAN or VPN network access to virtually any business address in the United States.

Speaking to investors at J. P. Morgan Chase & Co.’s 32nd Annual Technology and Telecom Conference in San Francisco, Dan Moffat, president and CEO of New Edge Networks, said there is just too much finger-pointing in telecom. Both enterprise and carrier “customers want one-stop shopping and one neck to grab” for their multi-site network services ranging from basic access to managed and secure connections.

“With one set of connections to New Edge Networks, our business and carrier customers can get broadband connectivity at virtually any business address in the United States,” Moffat told investors. “New Edge Networks can integrate complex network requirements that span multiple carriers, technologies, and geographies through our nationwide backbone network, which includes more than 850 switches and routers.

“Our low cost structure allows us to offer managed and secure VPN services to business customers at the disruptive price of $99 a month, per site,” Moffat said.

New Edge Networks seamlessly integrates a combination of access technologies that best fit customers’ business applications or bandwidth requirements. These include frame relay, ATM, DSL, cable or satellite access. New Edge Networks targets carriers and multi-site business customers with two to 2,000 locations.

Businesses and carriers must establish and maintain costly interconnections with multiple providers to replicate New Edge Networks’ ubiquitous reach. “Most customers don’t want to be in the telecom business,” Moffat said. “We like complexity. We have processes and back-office systems to manage networks 24x7x365.

“Given tight capital budgets as well as the complexity and cost of maintaining separate carrier relationships, New Edge Networks provides a compelling value proposition,” Moffat said.

New Edge Networks provides frame relay reach into almost every telephone calling area, or LATA, in the United States. It also has reach into about 90 percent of all telephone company central offices equipped for DSL services. New Edge Networks uses cable and satellite access as fill-in.

Moffat told investors that information has become an increasingly critical component of every business. He said customers are upgrading from dial-up connections or displacing traditional WAN networks with less expensive IP-based secure VPNs. This allows them to get twice or triple the bandwidth for about half the cost of a traditional WAN network.
