SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – (August 4, 2004) – Customers in some Wendy’s restaurants in Arizona will be able to move through the food line as quickly as they glance at the menu on the wall.
What’s more, the private franchise owner of eight Wendy’s restaurants in Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Tempe, Ariz. will have real-time, remote access to each sales transaction, inventory, as well as various administration, banking, and accounting functions.
And for the safety and security of customers and employees, the stores are equipped with cameras that stream real-time video over the same broadband network.
4Real Ventures LLC, which owns nine Wendy’s restaurant franchises, installed a secure, private wide area network linking all locations with the company’s headquarters in North Scottsdale, Ariz. The IP-based virtual private network uses frame relay and DSL technologies powered by New Edge Networks, based in Vancouver, Wash.
“Wendy’s of Scottsdale is taking a leading, ‘Biggie-size’ high-tech approach to a low-tech business,” said Ron Stenzel, senior vice president and general manager of Darcomm Network Solutions, a network and system solution provider based in Phoenix. “The integrated real-time solution also allows other franchise owners and retailers to piggy-back onto Wendy’s private and secure network to boost service and profitability.”
Darcomm Networks advised 4 Real Ventures on its network design and installation. New Edge Networks completed installation in July.
“The network that Wendy’s of Scottsdale put in place is all about better serving customers and maximizing efficiency in our operations,” said Troy Richards, a principal with 4Real Ventures. “With an always on network, we will be able to process credit or debit cards transactions 75 percent faster and cut our cost per transaction from as much as a nickel to as little as two cents. The lines move faster, our customers are happier, and store profitability goes up.”
In addition to fast routing and network management from New Edge Networks, Darcomm provided 4 Real Ventures a Citrix software solution and professional services for remotely measuring retail production and managing productivity. Until now each store was an “island” and used dial up connections to transact some, but not all, financial and corporate reporting transactions.
“We plan to use technology and operate our smart network as a profit center,” said Richards, noting that 4 Real Ventures intends to extend and share its private network with other Wendy’s franchises or independent retailers in the region. This will make leading-edge technology solutions available and affordable for storeowners with as few as one location.
There are more than 100 Wendy’s restaurants in Arizona alone. With the largest network coverage, New Edge Networks can provide broadband reach to virtually any business address in the United States using frame relay and DSL technologies.
