VANCOUVER, Wash. – (Nov. 8, 2004) – Spacenet Inc. and New Edge Networks have reached an agreement enabling the satellite service provider to expand its broadband network offerings to include DSL access from New Edge Networks. The agreement builds on a separate wholesale relationship in which New Edge Networks offers Spacenet’s Connexstar satellite-based telecommunications services.
Under terms of the latest agreement, Spacenet will be able to offer its enterprise customers DSL access when and where the technology option is a viable alternative for satellite. Spacenet will manage the installation and maintenance of all DSL network services by New Edge Networks, bill and collect, and retain relationships with its customers.
“This agreement is about building upon existing relationships that Spacenet has with many of the world’s largest multi-site business enterprises,” said Bill Gerety, president and CEO of Spacenet. “By expanding these customers’ broadband network options, Spacenet increases its value – and, we expect, further expands the universe of new prospects for our services.
“Because we serve the needs of very large, extremely demanding enterprises, Spacenet has stringent service, reliability, and availability requirements, and New Edge Networks met or exceeded all of them,” Gerety said. “We feel confident offering their connectivity services to our blue-chip clientele.”
Spacenet intends to market and sell the DSL services directly. It is already accepting orders.
Through a wholesale agreement with New Edge Networks, Spacenet gains access to about 90 percent of business addresses that are in the company’s DSL reach. New Edge Networks’ core and extended DSL coverage spans about 9,000 telephone company central office locations that are equipped for DSL service.
“Not all broadband access is created equal; different applications require different access solutions, throughput, and quality of service,” said Dan Moffat, president and CEO of New Edge Networks. “The measure of success among broadband networking companies of the future will be their ability to seamlessly integrate solutions at virtually any business address and keep their customers happy through high quality of service.
“By complementing our respective competencies, New Edge Networks and Spacenet are positioning themselves to tap into the lucrative opportunities in nationwide wide area networking,” Moffat said.
Last March, New Edge Networks and Spacenet announced their first wholesale agreement that allowed New Edge Networks to offer Spacenet’s Connexstar satellite service. New Edge Networks offers satellite as a fill-in where other access options are not available.
