New Edge Networks Gets "Product of the Year Award" for Managed Networks

VANCOUVER, Wash. - (Jan. 12, 2005) - Frost & Sullivan, a global leader in research and growth consulting, has awarded its 2005 Telecommunications Services Product of the Year Award to New Edge Networks' product suite of managed network services.

Frost & Sullivan presents its annual Product of the Year Award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in new products and technologies within its industry. The recipient company has shown innovation by launching a broad line of emerging products and technologies.

Frost & Sullivan selected New Edge Networks' suite of managed VPNs, short for virtual private networks, because it offers 100 percent reach to any business location in the United States; the widest choice of access technology options; a full range of value-added managed services; and breakthrough price points. New Edge Networks is a single source provider for broadband networks for both business and carrier customers.

Last year, Frost & Sullivan named New Edge Networks as its Telecommunications Service Provider Company of the Year.

"The managed VPN service offerings from New Edge Networks are robust and flexible for meeting the complex network requirements of the largest U. S. communications carriers, as well as the needs of business customers anywhere," said Vinod Ramanathan, telecommunications analyst with Frost & Sullivan.

New Edge Networks can integrate any combination of DSL, Frame Relay, ATM, cable, and satellite access technologies. The product suite includes both network-based VPNs and customer premises equipment (CPE)-based networks. Customers can choose to manage their own private networks or rely on New Edge Networks for total project management from network design to installation to network turn-up and monitoring. Managed VPNs from New Edge Networks start at less than $100 a month, per location.

Last November New Edge Networks formed a Retail Broadband Alliance with several industry vendors to provide retail merchants a single place to go for VPN, point-of-sale, payment processing, and associated application solutions that they can trust to grow revenue, cut expenses, and improve customer experience.

"Businesses are spread far and wide across the country. This requires interaction with multiple carriers and use of multiple access technologies," Ramanathan said. "New Edge Networks has positioned itself as the "one neck to grab" for multi-location networks at any business address in the United States."

New Edge Networks, through its BigFoot initiative, claims the largest DSL footprint in the U. S. with reach into more than 9,000 unique telephone company central offices. This coverage touches about 90 percent of all business locations. Where there is no DSL availability, New Edge Networks can integrate other broadband access options.

"VPNs are becoming ubiquitous in today's world of communications for all business entities," Ramanathan said. "A majority of present data traffic is through ATM and frame relay. This is shifting gradually to IP VPNs, and migrations will accelerate over the next 10 years. What's more, the advent of less expensive broadband access technology, such as DSL, is making it cost-effective for small and mid-size businesses to build VPNs for the first time."

Generally, frame relay-based networks move data at 56 kilobits per second and cost about $250 a month per location. By migrating to VPNs, customers can triple their speed and cut network costs in half without compromising network reliability. Customers that migrate from dial up to VPN can achieve comparable performance-for-price value.

"Our sales growth over the last five years is evidence of the value that our business and carrier customers place on our suite of multi-location network products and services," said Dan Moffat, president and CEO of New Edge Networks. "We are proud of Frost & Sullivan's special recognition."

New Edge Networks had revenue of more than $110 million for 2004.

"Going forward, Frost & Sullivan fully expects New Edge Networks to grab a bigger slice of the $20 billion frame relay, ATM, and multi-site dial-up market with the company's managed VPN offering," Ramanathan said.
