VANCOUVER, Wash. – (April 12, 2005) – New Edge Networks has been awarded certification on an end-to-end solution for helping retail merchants migrate from dial-up to high-speed broadband networks that speed-up card payment transactions.
The solution allows merchants to keep their existing point-of-sale systems that currently use dial-up telephone lines yet make the move to broadband networks that use different high-speed transmission protocols. Merchants avoid new infrastructure costs and expenses for training employees how to use a new point-of-sale system while still gaining the benefits of high-speed payments.
VeriFone Inc., the leading global provider of payment solutions, and Paymentech, a national electronic payment processor, tested and certified this solution with New Edge Networks. It consists of a VeriFone Ruby point-of-sale system connected to Precidia Technologies’ Ether232POS over a wide area network from New Edge Networks. Precidia’s Ether232POS converts the dial-up signal to Internet Protocol, or IP, without changing processes.
When a solution is certified, VeriFone and Paymentech will support technical calls from customers.
“New Edge Networks sought certification to help customers take full advantage of broadband networking without costly expenses for replacing working systems and causing disruptions to their business activities,” said Dan Moffat, president and CEO of New Edge Networks. “Fast and successful transactions at the point of sale help businesses retain loyal customers and increase sales.”
Broadband networks provide three times the data transmission speeds for about the same cost of dial-up networks used in typical business applications. In addition to speed, customers also can use their always-on network for various applications such as sales polling, inventory control, workforce management, video monitoring, and email.
Quik Mart, a 28-location convenience store chain in Tucson, Ariz., is the first merchant to use the certified solution for upgrading to broadband.
“Being able to keep our existing point-of-sale system was a major factor in our decision to move from dial-up to broadband,” said Troy W. Little, president of Quik Mart stores in Tucson. “We didn’t want to replace our existing point-of-sale system but we clearly saw the business advantages of a broadband network. New Edge Networks and the Retail Broadband Alliance minimized the complexity of our wide area network. We got the best of both worlds.
“We are now able to complete credit card transactions in five to six seconds – down from about 30 seconds in the past,” Little said. “This speeds customers through our check-out lines which translates into a positive shopping experience and increased sales volumes. In addition, we have more bandwidth to run other applications that will help us provide customers more services in the future. We are now just seeing the tip of the iceberg.”
