VANCOUVER, Wash. – (May 10, 2005) – New Edge Networks has received a new contract for building a managed broadband network linking retail stores within U. S. Coast Guard bases around the country.
Under terms of the agreement, New Edge Networks will provide the U. S. Coast Guard Exchange System (CGES), a support organization within the Department of Homeland Security, a managed private network linking retail stores at 70 U. S. Coast Guard bases along the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf Coasts. The network will provide CGES about three times the speed of a dial-up computer connection for the equivalent cost of two telephone lines.
The agreement follows a five-month trial involving nine sites using a blend of access technologies including different flavors of DSL and frame relay technologies. The private high-speed network will be completed before the end of June.
CGES provides retail goods and services to military personnel and their families. It plans to use its high-speed broadband network for expediting card payment transactions, sales polling, and email. The network also has excess bandwidth capacity to run future voice, video, and database applications.
“We presented New Edge Networks some big challenges for coordinating the installation and testing of sites at different bases around the country,” said Mike Luther, director of IT for CGES. “Adhering and working through stringent security requirements yet meeting our installation timelines is no easy task.
“We are excited about the improved shopping experience and efficiency we will be able to deliver in our stores through a private high-speed network,” Luther said.
New Edge Networks will install and manage the private network, providing CGES network monitoring, trouble reporting and ticketing, as well as bandwidth use reports.
“We appreciate the trust and confidence that the Coast Guard Exchange System has placed on our team and network capabilities,” said Dan Moffat, president and CEO of New Edge Networks. “Our team understands the importance of meeting customer requirements and we strive to exceed their expectations.”
